CAREERS AT SMG

Volunteering Programs

Our seasonal volunteer programs are built for those who are just getting started with their careers within the music industry. Join one of our various departments including A&R, digital marketing, creative, events, and operational capabilities. You’ll gain first-hand and real-world experience working at an entertainment company based in downtown and greater-area Chicago (or remotely). As a volunteer, you aren’t just a worker to us, you’re a part of our family and community.

We’re looking for passionate individuals with a love for music and the music business. Additionally, we generally prefer university students in Chicago who are studying within a relevant field. Notice: we do not currently support internships for academic credit. However, we are working toward it.

ABOUT

We manage our volunteering programs on a “term” cycle. So, you’ll stay with us for one season (around 3 months) until your term expires. At the mid-point of each season, we’ll open up our volunteering programs for applications for the subsequent term. Your application should consist of a resumé, cover letter, and any supplemental materials you think we might need. After the application window closes, we’ll review everything submitted to us in detail. A few weeks before the following term begins, we’ll send out decision notifications and begin the onboarding process. You are more than welcome to apply for a second term or a term extension. However, we may give more consideration for newer candidates.

We are a smaller-scale company; so our volunteering programs have a relatively small commitment. We understand many of our current crew members are full-time college students with jobs and lives to attend to. We simply ask that you attend regular meetings and perform your duties at a pace and frequency that makes sense for you. However, if you are unable to continue the remainder of your term or are inactive for longer than three weeks, you will be placed on a leave-of-absence (LOA).

Your duties are purely dependent on the team you are a part of. However, most of our volunteers are given a wide range freedoms to complete their goals. Oftentimes, we’ll hold general-body meetings online, but there may be times where we have in-person meetings, events, or studio sessions. In-person activities will take place throughout the Chicago area at various locations (times tbd). As a music industry worker, you’ll frequently be in direct communication with artists, managers, and other industry professionals, so you are expected to act accordingly. Lastly, we manage primary correspondence via email and our crew Discord server.
